I had just returned from Vietnam with orders to the 82nd Airborne Division. While on leave I went to Fort Lewis about 60 miles from my home in Wahington and asked for my orders to be changed. I wanted to attend Drill Sergeant School at Fort Lewis Wa. My order were immediately changed. I reported to A-4-1 North Fort Lewis as an assistant DI and was assigned SSGT Bill Lines as my Platoon Sergeant in a Basic training company on North Fort Lewis. We were good friends. Bill and Nels Chapman both recommended that I attend the Drill Sergeant School in the spring of 71 at Fort Lewis. I did and I graduated in the top of my class. Bill went to Europe and I became the Senior Drill Instrutor with the 104 Division in Washington State(Army Resreve) in 1972. I attended college for 2 years and then in 74 I re-enlisted in the Army and was order to Washington DC where I worked full time and attended the American University each evening. I graduated after two years and was immediately offered a direct commission as an officer in Washington D.C. Bill and others where my greatest inspiration. Bill Lines my friend believed that nothing is impossible to those who commit themselves to the perfection of what ever they pursue and believe. Failure is never an option.
Thanks Bill!
